How the calculation works
- Area = length × width.
- Cubic yards = area × depth in inches ÷ 324.
- Tons = cubic yards × weight per cubic yard. The default is 1.4 tons (2,800 lb); supplier weight tables list most gravels at about 2,600–2,800 lb per cubic yard and sand at 2,600–2,900 lb.
Example
Length: 20 ft · Width: 10 ft · Depth: 3 in · Weight per cubic yard: 1.4 tons
Result: 2.59 tons or 1.85 cu yd.
Tips before you buy
- Weight depends on the stone type and moisture, so ask your supplier for the figure for the exact material.
- Suppliers sell by the ton or by the yard — compare both prices.
- Always confirm coverage and yield with the manufacturer's label — products differ.
